It was the finesse of jockey Cody Jensen that helped El Primero Del Ano Derby winner New Look win the $25,000 Town Policy Handicap said owner Mimi Wells on Friday at Los Alamitos.
“Cody finessed him through the lane,” Wells said. “Cody is an exceptional rider and he is also so smart and patient. He knew exactly what New Look needed to win. Warming him up Cody probably figured out what the horse needed or didn’t need to happen in the gate. He sat still on him and helped him get out of the gate.”
Getting out of the gate cleanly had been a challenge for New Look in recent starts. The son of Walk Thru Fire had some very quick starts earlier this season, including a wire to wire victory in the El Primero on April 7, but he had some troubled beginnings in three out of his previous four races. However, the Ed Allred-bred runner ran more to his El Primero form in the Town Policy, as he broke on top from post eight and stayed strong from there to a 1 ¼ length victory over Tom Atwood’s Consider. Trained by Dan Francisco, New Look earned $13,750 after covering the 400 yards in :19.739.
“That’s how we needed him to break,” Wells said.
Jensen picked up the mount because jockey Antonio Alberto was involved in a spill in a Thoroughbred race earlier in the evening. Fortunately, Alberto was reported to be “Okay” later in the evening and was being released from the hospital.
As for New Look, his next start will most likely be the A Ransom Handicap on Friday, December 21. He’ll probably enjoy some time off following the A Ransom.
“He’s not in the Southern California Derby and I think the Los Alamitos Winter Championship trials next year might be too tough for him,” Wells added.
“He’s made a lot of starts this year,” Francisco added. “He’s run 10 times. We’ll go in that race in December and he’ll probably get some time off after that.”
Trained by John Wells, Consider earned $5,625 for finishing second. Ed Allred’s Kool Million ran third and was followed across the wire by Jess Wilson, Ladies Royal Six, Properly Snowbound, Hi On The List, A Mere Dynasty and Meareds Boy.
