Owner Mimi Wells’ outstanding racing season at Los Alamitos continued after the Walk Thru Fire gelding New Look scored a half length victory in the $17,000 Dana Point Handicap on Friday night.
New Look’s victory was his third in a stakes race on the year and his sixth in 11 starts. Trained by Dan Francisco, the Ed Allred-bred sprinter won the El Primero Del Ano Derby and Town Policy Handicap before scoring in the Dana Point. The win gave Wells six stakes wins on the year – all of them with the help of Francisco. The owner also scored a pair of stakes this year with Forrest Fire (Katella Handicap and Whosleavingwho Handicap) and on November 18 she enjoyed Getit Together’s victory in the Las Damas Handicap.
New Look is out of the Separatist broodmare Make Over, a lightly race sprinter during her career, but more notable a daughter of 1987 All American Futurity winner Elans Special. Make Over’s siblings include Lizas Mystique, the dam of AQHA Champion Catchmeinyourdreams, plus the stakes winner Gotothemountain and Really Special, the winner of the 2005 Masterpiece Paint Horse Futurity. A $28,000 purchase at the 2010 Los Alamitos Equine Sale, New Look earned $9,350 in the Dana Point to take his career earnings to $150,440.
Wootan Racing’s J D continues his solid local season at Los Alamitos. In three starts here, the Cody Joiner-trained colt has won an allowance race, finished fourth to the talented Last To Fire in a trial to the Los Alamitos Super Derby and has now finished second in a handicap race. The son of Teller Cartel earned $3,825 for running second. Study Hall Pierce, Delight At Night, Red Dasher and Whata Corona Runner completed the field.
