       Ed Allred’s Sale Topper topped the list of qualifiers to theGovernor’s Cup Futurity after posting the fastest clocking of :17.740 onSaturday at Los Alamitos. A total of 58 runners competed in eight trials at 350yards with the horses with the fastest times returning for the Governor’s Cupfinal to be held on July 25. The Governor’s Cup Futurity will be the richestevent on the $1,000,000 night of Quarter Horse stakes racing action.


Much was expected from Sale Topper following his solid thirdplace finish to the brilliant filly Walk Thru Crystal in last month’s $1,040,000Ed Burke Million Futurity. The Scott Willoughby-trained gelding did notdisappoint, as he led from start to finish en route to posting his second winin four career starts. Carlos Huerta piloted the son of Walk Thru Fire from theoutside post number seven to a neck victory over EG High Desert Farms’Unclaimed Dividend. Sale Topper’s mother is Special And Proud, a daughter ofthe blue-hen mare Oh La Proud. Special And Proud made only one career start andit was a forgettable one. She finished sixth in a race for maidens in 2006.


Trained by Yanet Rodriguez and ridden by Jesus Ayala,Unclaimed Dividend finished with the second fastest qualifying time of :17.773and will have his chance to run in a futurity final after being unlucky to missthe Kindergarten Futurity earlier this year. Unclaimed Dividend won hisKindergarten trial, but he finished in a tie for the 10th fastestqualifying time. Unclaimed Dividend would go on to lose the shake for the finalberth to the Kindergarten. No shakes were necessary this time around, as heeasily posted one of the top clockings of the night.


Steve Burns’ Little Talks made a big statement in the fifthtrial, as she posted a ¾ length victory in the third fastest time of :17.797.Ridden by Cesar De Alba for trainer Mike Casselman, Little Talks came into thistrial after winning her trial to the Ed Burke Million Futurity. While thedaughter of Favorite Cartel missed qualifying to the Ed Burke Million final, shedoes have an outstanding record of three wins from four career starts. Shefigures to be a major contender in the final.


Sale Topper is not the only Ed Burke Million finalist readyto race in the Governor’s Cup. McColee Land and Livestock’s Budder Think Twiceoutdueled tough rivals Shut Out and the previously unbeaten Miss Sadie Thompsonwhile posting the fourth fastest time of :17.80. Ridden by Omar Reyes fortrainer Cody Joiner, the First Down Dash filly came into this race afterfinishing fifth in the prestigious Ed Burke Million.
