Javier Molina’s 2-year-old filly Jess And Molly (left) broke her maiden on Sunday at Los Alamitos after winning the fourth race at 300 yards. Ridden by Santiago Mendez for trainer Guillermo Morales, Jess And Molly led from start to finish on the way to a half length victory in a time of :15.625.
Sired by AQHA Champion Mr Jess Perry, Jess And Molly is the first foal out of the multiple Grade 1 finalist Mollys Cartel. On the track, Mollys Cartel earned $150,163 while racing in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, Ed Burke Million Futurity and Los Alamitos Winter Derby. Jess And Molly’s granddam is the Grade 1 Vessels Maturity winner Five Bar Molly. Mr Jess Perry is the sire of champions Apollitical Jess, One Famous Eagle, Noconi and more.
“Jess And Molly is a smart filly,” Morales said. “We ran her against the boys in this race and she did fine. She’s very professional and has done everything right. We’ll now be able to give her some time off for the trials to the Ed Burke Million Futurity (on June 9). We just want to keep her sound.”
Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas’ La Jolla Cowboy finished second with a solid time of :15.69. Good Timer Cartel, Kamasutra SA, Undercover Kid, Run Like U Stol It, Coronaberrytwo and Lucky Tobe Here completed the field.
Jockey Santiago Mendez enjoyed a riding triple last Sunday evening. In addition to his winning ride aboard the sharp looking Jess And Molly, Mendez also won a pair of races for trainer Antonio Soto. He guided La Botella Racing Stable’s Hermes Bryan to victory in the second race and Salvador Basquez’s Swinginwiththechicks in the sixth.
