Trainer Denny Ekins saddled his 1,000th Quarter Horse winner at Los Alamitos courtesy of Stanley Watkins’ Sassytacs in the second race on Sunday at Los Alamitos.
“I’ve enjoyed a tremendous career,” Ekins said. “I’m grateful to have trained so many nice horses going back to the outstanding Tolltac, who is the horse that helped me reached new heights at Los Alamitos many years ago. The great thing when I look back is having the pleasure to train horses for so many great owners like Legacy Ranch, Mueller Racing and other outstanding people.”
Ridden by Carlos Huerta, Sassytacs is a 2-year-old filly by Tres Seis. She won the 300-yard race at odds of 30-1 in a time of :15.601.
Ekins is the ninth trainer to reach the 1,000 Quarter Horse win mark at Los Alamitos. His top runners over the years have included the likes of millionaire and multiple AQHA Champion Ocean Runaway, 2003 AQHA Distance Champion Sterling Sport, 1983 AQHA Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Tolltac and multiple major futurity winner Finding Nemo. Ekins also saddled World Champion Cold Cash 123 to victory in the Go Man Go Handicap last year. Other of his top stakes winners over the years include Not For Long, Waverino and Tolls Touch.
