Lucky Seven Ranch’s Walk Around Blues posted her second impressive victory in a row after defeating a sharp field of fillies in Saturday’s $15,000 Garden Grove Handicap at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Cruz Mendez, who won three races on the night, Walk Around Blues won the Garden Grove for 3-year-old fillies in wire-to-wire fashion while finishing a half-length ahead of runner-up One More Card. Trained by Mike Casselman, Walk Around Blues covered the 330 yards in :16.775. This was her third victory in seven starts. She had previously scored a 1 ¼ length allowance victory on December 19.
“We’ve always liked her a lot,” Casselman said. “Cruz has done a nice job with her and fits her nicely. She’ll go to Burns Ranch now and they’ll get an embryo out of her. She’ll come back to the track from there and compete in a couple of derby trials.”
Bred by her owners, the Walk Thru Fire filly is out of the Shazoom mare, Queens R Blue. A six-time winner in her racing career, Queens R Blue was second to champion Check N Fetch in the 2013 Miss Princess Handicap and also raced in that year’s Vessels Maturity and Merial California Distaff Challenge and in the 2012 Las Damas Handicap. Walk Around Blues’s granddam is the 2002 Los Alamitos Million Futurity winner First Place Queen. Walk Around Blues earned $8,250 in the Garden Grove to take her career earnings to $19,687.
