Tuesday’s morning workouts at Los Alamitos featured 29 2-year-olds posting their first qualifying workout at 220 yards. There were three juveniles that shared the morning’s fastest time of :12.4 headed Abigail Kawananakoa’s Free Swinger, the highest seller at last year’s Los Alamitos Equine Sale.
Purchased for $220,000, Free Swinger (shown on the left) hesitated slightly when the gates opened, but he quickly picked up speed from the outside post and was never pushed by the rider en route to a very promising first workout. Bred by Ed Allred, the impressive looking colt by Walk Thru Fire comes from the great family of 2008 PCQHRA champion broodmare Chickasis. Free Swinger is a full brother to Governor’s Cup Derby and Governor’s Cup Futurity winner Hot Hitter and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity finalist Sis Is Hot. He’s also a full brother to the stakes winner Streak Hitter and the stakes placed runner Hot Hitting. He’s a half brother to multiple stakes winner Hard Hitting and former track record holder Lassen County. Paul Jones trains Free Swinger.
Free Swinger’s workout partner was Mimi Wells’ Chicks Fayvorite, a half brother to multiple stakes winner Forrest Fire. Chicks Fayvorite, who worked in :12.6, is a son of Favorite Cartel out of 2010 PCQHRA champion broodmare Chicks Tell, who is also the mother of Champions Night winners Hez Stellar and Dash To Tell. The morning’s other bullet works were posted by Paul Jones and Thompson Racing, Inc.’s Kings Bridge, a colt by Foose and out of Sister Lucy and a Felix Gonzalez-trained runner out of the mare Sonora Cartel. They both worked from the outside post.
Among the horses that posted :12.5 works were Bookish, who worked on the outside along with the runner out of Sonora Cartel, and Hatefulist, a colt by Separatist out of AQHA champion 2-year-old filly Hardly Hateful. The latter earned her champion title in 2004 after running second to Ocean Runaway in the Los Alamitos Million Futurity and second to Thewayouwantmetoo in the Rainbow Futurity. She worked from the inside post. Bookish, meanwhile, is colt by Walk Thru Fire and out of All American Derby finalist Callan Rocks. Other notable 2-year-olds working this morning was Jorge Haddad’s Kittyna, who worked 220 yards in :12.7 from the inside post. The filly by Lousiana Cartel is out of the outstanding producer Las Alamitos. She’s the mother of Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity winner Ragazzo, a winner of $559,500, Giorgino, the winner of the TQHA Sires Futurity who took part in 17 other stakes races, and Potenzza, the third place finisher to Ms First Prize Rose in the 2013 Rainbow Futurity.
