Peruvian rider Christian Aragon has made a huge splash at Los Alamitos Race Course in races around the turn, as the veteran pilot as already won seven races from his first 22 starts aboard Thoroughbreds this season. Aragon has won an impressive 32% of his races so far and has certainly looked comfortable riding in the 5/8th mile oval. Only four of his first 22 mounts have finished out of the money here (an winning ratio of 82%) and even more outstanding is the fact that his average winning odds currently stand at an amazing $22.70 per win.

Aragon arrived in the United States in October of 2013 after an outstanding career in his native land of Peru where the jockey won the 1991 Derby Nacional aboard Musicale in 1991. The Derby Nacional is a  Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Hipódromo de Monterrico in Lima, Peru. Open to three-year-olds, the Derby Nacional is contested at approximately 1½ miles at the end of the year and serves as the third leg of the Peruvian Quadruple Crown. The race has been held since 1903.

Aragon became a household name in the equine ranks in his native land following his winning ride in the Derby Nacional. He has alos the country’s second leading rider in 1990-91. He has worked hard to make a name for himself in the United States after riding at Golden Gate, Santa Anita and now at Los Alamitos. Aragon has won 16 of 156 mounts aboard Thoroughbreds while earning $203,299 and his horses have hit the board a total of 47 times.  Aragon came to North American at the urging of his brother Pepe Aragon, who arrived in the U.S. prior to Christian’s arrival.

At the current race, Aragon figures to become a star at the Orange County track, while joining the likes Omar Herrera Santos and Marcelo Medina as new faces making an impact here to go along with talented, young pilots Efrain Hernandez and Jonathan Roman. Add to that the usual names of Ramon Guce, Cheryl Charlton, Gary Bog , Alex Bautista and Alex Jimenez, and solid pilots Cayetano Chaparro and Carlos Marquez and the current local Thoroughbred jockey colony is as competitive as it has been in quite some time.
