Cuadra Mariscal’s Justamitch is the new king of the 870-yard races at Los Alamitos after spoiling Secret Lass’s bid for a fifth straight victory in the $12,000 Catalina Handicap at 870 yards. Ridden by Oscar Herrera Santos for trainer Salvador Naranjo, the Thoroughbred gelding sired by Onebadshark was picking up his third win of the year around the turn, the most by any horse this season.
Starting from post number two, Justamitch stalked Mauzzie and the Quarter Horse Follow The Dream in the backstretch before making his move around the turn. Bred by E-Racing.com, the 5-year-old took a two length lead at the top of the stretch and then cruised home to his seventh career victory from 19 starts. Justamitch also enjoyed 870-yard wins on February 22 and April 4. He came into this race after running at Golden Gate on May 29. The stakes win was Justamitch’s first ever. It was also the first stakes win at Los Alamitos for jockey Herrera Santos and trainer Naranjo. Justamitch covered the distance in :45.469 while earning $6,600. His career earnings now stand at $47,000.
Emilio Quinones’ Secret Lass was going after his third win in a row at 870 yards here. He also shooting for his fifth victory in a row, but he chased Justamitch from the start and was never able to seriously challenge the winner. This is his first loss since finishing second here on November 9. Ramon Guce piloted for trainer Lorenzo Ruiz. Changing Karma, Follow The Dream, Mauzzie, and Red Hot Niko completed the field.
