The 11th annual Los Alamitos Equine Sale enjoyed a solid and promising opening session in which the average yearling price for the day was $16,519. Hip #119 Ur My Princess and Hip #139 Trinity Force (left), a pair of full siblings sired by Walk Thru Fire from the Lazy Creek Ranch consignment, finished as the $75,000 co-high sellers of the day. The second and final session of the Los Alamitos Equine Sale featuring Hips #193 thru #381 will kick off at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
The average yearling price was down 7.2% from last year’s $17,809 average yearling price, but the 2014 opening session featured a purchase of $200,000 and another one of $175,000. This year’s average is up 20% from the opening session in 2013. The bigger ticket items in this year’s sale could come during day two of the sale. The second day will be headed by Hips #352 (He Too Looks Hot) and #353 (Look At Her), a pair full siblings sired by Walk Thru Fire and out of the award winning broodmare Look Her Over. Bred by Ed Allred, the two yearlings are full siblings to last year’s Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity winner He Looks Hot. Allred's consignment on Sunday will also include Hip #229 (A Bit Quirky), a Stel Corona filly and a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Quirky. Allred also bred Hip #279 (Still Friends) is a filly by Foose and a full sister to Governor’s Cup and El Primero Del Ano Derby winner winner Forget It.
Burns Ranch’s consignment for day two will include Hip #250 (Are Those Real), a filly by One Sweet Jess from the family of Dont Dink With Me, Miss Kittys Bar Bet, Ynot Walk and Quirky. Vessels Stallion Farm’s consignment will be headed by Hip #265 (Perrys Getting Down), a half brother to Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity winner One Quick First Down. La Presita LLC has consigned Hip #245 (The Crusador), a colt from the family of 2007 Broodmare of the Year Runaway Wave and 2007 World Champion Blues Girl Too. Lazy E Ranch, Agent for John Andreini, has consigned Hip #228 (Staggering Stride), a half sister to champion millionaire FDD Dynasty, while Vista Equine Colorado, LLC, agent for Cook and Erickson, has consigned Hip #342 (Shall Be Separate) a half-brother to World Champion Last To Fire and stakes finalist Last To Check Him.
On Saturday, 126 of the 161 yearlings that entered the sale ring were sold for a repurchase rate of only 22%. Gross sales for the 126 yearlings sold were $2,081,400. In addition 12 mares were sold for $155,900 for a solid average of $12,992. Two horses of mixed stock sold for a total of $16,000. The grand total for day one was 140 horses sold for $2,253,300 for an average of $16,095. Valeriano Racing Stables LLC was the top buyer on day one after purchasing the co-high sellers for $75,000 each. Hip #119 Ur My Princess and Hip #139 Trinity Force are both full siblings to 2012 Ed Burke Million Futurity runner-up Fires Blazin, a five time graded stakes finalist at Los Alamitos and a winner of $369,985. Out of the Chicks A Blazin mare Thatsa Blazin Chick, Ur My Princess and Trinity Force are half siblings to Buffalo Head and The Fire Fly. Lazy Creek Ranch finished as the third leading consignor in gross sales with three horses sellings for $153,200. Ed Allred was the leading consignor in gross sales with 26 head selling for $531,500, while Burns Ranch finished second with 20 head selling for $496,500.
There were nine horses which sold for over $50,000 each. Following Lazy Creek’s co-high sellers, the next highest seller on day one was Hip #160 (American Force), a colt by First Down Dash out of American Purse, purchased for $62,000 by Ron Hartley from the Firth Ranch consignment. Dutch Masters III and Jaime Gomez purchased Hip #92 (Smell Perfume) from the Burns Ranch consignment for $57,000. The Foose filly is a full sister to PCQHRA Breeders Derby and La Primera Del Ano Derby winner Bac In Front. Bret Vickery purchased Hip #$181 (Alone In Fire), a colt by Walk Thru Fire out of Coronas Fast Honey. Consigned by Burns Ranch, Alone In Fire hails from the family of 2006 Broodmare of the Year First Prize Dash, First Prize Leesa, First Caroline and First Prize Robin. Allred purchased Hip #61 (Runnin Fast) for $55,000 from the Burns Ranch consignment. Runnin Fast is from the family of Bac In Front and Checknbac. The top selling mare was Allred’s All American Derby finalist Callan Rocks, which was purchased by Jaime Gomez for $55,000.
