Three of the top older horses in the Intermountain region will be in action on Sunday at Los Alamitos. Balata Joe Now, which has hit the board in 16 of 20 career starts, and Joe Legacy, a winner of $72,008 in his racing career, will be among the six sprinters competing in the $16,000 Laguna Beach Overnight Handicap in the ninth race on Sunday.

Jere Brinkerhoff and Jesus Canales’ 7-year-old Gallant Mystic (left), the winner of the Kip Didericksen Handicap here on October 2, will head a 300-yard dash for top claimers also on Sunday night. A winner of nearly $80,000 in his career, Gallant Mystic will be going after his eighth lifetime win.

In the Laguna Beach, Balata Joe Now is back in action after missing the John Ward Handicap with a minor setback. The Idaho-bred had previously finished third in the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap. Gret Torgerson’s Joe Legacy chased Moonist and Far Niente to no avail in the Grade 1 Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship and should be a bigger threat in the Laguna Beach. This field will also include Muller Racing’s recent allowance winner Ocean Won Away and the tough Tres Magicals.
