Dennie and Kris Hill’s Apolitical Zoom posted her third win in four starts at Los Alamitos this year after scoring a half-length victory over La Pacifica Handicap winner Take A Look in Saturday’s $25,000 Las Damas Handicap for 3-year-olds and up fillies and mares.
Ridden by Cesar De Alba for trainer Bret Vickery, Apolitical Zoom took the lead in the Las Damas shortly after the start and never looked back on the way to earning $13,750 for the win. The win was Apolitical Zoom’s second in as many starts at Los Alamitos since returning here after a two-race stint at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. Apolitical Zoom was seventh and eighth in her two starts at Ruidoso Downs this past summer. She went to Ruidoso Downs after two great efforts at Los Alamitos at the start of the year. The filly by Apollitical Jess won her trial to the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby here on January 24 and then ran a tremendous race while finishing second in the $209,000 Winter Derby final on February 14.
“She impressed us with those winter races and that’s why we decided to go to Ruidoso with her,” Vickery said. “Up there she got hit in a race got stepped on and got cut up bad. She needed time off after what happened. She needed to heal up.”
Apolitical Zoom returned to Los Alamitos and has wasted no time in returning to her winning ways.
“She likes it here,” Vickery said. “She’s always done well here.”
Now a winner of four of 12 starts, the homebred filly has earned $68,852 in her career. She’ll now be pointed to the running of the Grade 2 Charger Bar Handicap early next year.
“We intend to run her next year,” Vickery said. “She’s lightly raced and she’s doing great right now. We’ll race her as long as she seems to like what she’s doing and continues to do well. I’m sure the Hills watched this race on TVG and I’m sure they’re happy. I’m going to call them right now.”
Sent off as the second choice of 2-1 odds, Apolitical Zoom covered the 400 yards in :20.08. Ed Allred’s Take A Look, which came into this race after running a solid fourth to champion Heza Dasha Fire in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby, earned $5,625 for running second. Take A Look drifted in early, but she still managed to edge Political Chick by a nose for second. Eulices Gomez piloted her for trainer James Glenn, Jr.
Jon Lane Henderson’s Political Chick earned $3,125 for running third. Skinny Jeans, Blabber, Bring Me Home, and Significant Heart completed the field.
