Owner Clemente Hurtado and trainer Ricardo Guillen won their first stakes races of their careers at Los Alamitos thanks to the 13-1 longshot Zendaya and her photo finish win over PCQHRA Breeders Futurity runner-up Chalala Jess in Saturday’s $15,000 Long Beach Handicap for 2-year-old fillies.

Ridden by savvy veteran Alejandro Luna, Zendaya broke swiftly from post five to open up a half-length advantage on the field. However, Chalala Jess made a nice late charge and nearly caught the daughter of Foose  at the wire. Zendaya covered the distance in :15.52 while earning $8,250. This was Zendaya’s third win of the year and her fifth consecutive finish in the top two. Three races ago, Zendaya was the runner-up in the Fresno Futurity.

Alipio Burgosd’ Chalala Jess earned $3,375 for running second, while Johnny Trotter’s Bo Dash Bac earned $1,875 for running third. Miss Sadie Thompson, Nymph, Knocking On the Door and Highclere completed the field.
