Fourth in the Denim N DiamondsHandicap on February 20, Ed Allred’s Blabber returned to action eight dayslater to win $15,000 Elan Again Handicap over a solid group of aged mares onSunday at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Rodrigo Aceves, who was picking up his first stakes win sincereturning from shoulder surgery earlier this year, Blabber dominated from startto finish in the 350-yard race on the way to posting a ¾ length victory.Saddled by Scott Willoughby, Blabber covered the distance in :17.657 and scoredher fifth win in 13 career starts.

“We dropped her right back,” said Willoughby of Blabber’s quick return. “Shedidn’t get away very good last week and I knew this filly could run quite a bitmore than what she showed. We put her in this race and it came up pretty tough,a lot tougher than I really expected. She ran a great race tonight. Shefinished strong, broke great. Everything went perfect. Rodrigo rode her great. It worked out really well.”

The 4-year-old mare by Kiddy Up was picking up her second stakes win ofher career. She also won the $25,000 California Breeders Debutante Stakes lastyear and was second in the Luva Secret Handicap last year. She earned $8,250 inthis race to take her career earnings to $53,075. Sent off at 7-1 odds, Blabbercame into this race after getting bumped from both sides in the Denim NDiamonds. The Allred-bred mare was seventh during the early part of that race, but the gritty mare finished strongly to earn fourth place money in that race.Starting from post number five, Blabber was standing right next to Las Damas Handicapwinner Apolitical Zoom in the gate when the later broke thru the gate beforethe start.

“I was a little worried when that happened,” Willoughby said. “You neverknow what they’re going to do when they have to stand there like that, but (Blabber)broke like a rocket and never looked back.”

Blabber figures to be a familiar face in the distaff stakes division in2016.

“We’ll pick races for her all year,” the trainer added.

Apollitical Chic and Political Chick have nearly identical names andthey nearly had an identical result in the Elan Again. In the end, OscarAndrade’s Apollitical Chic edged her rival by a head to earn $3,375. Bred byMuniz Quarter Horses LLC and trained by Elena Andrade, Apollitical Chic hasfinished in the money in eight of nine career starts. Ridden by Cruz Mendez, thiswas her first ever start in a stakes race. Meanwhile, Jon Lane Henderson’sPolitical Chick has now finished fourth or better in five consecutive stakesraces. Third in this race, the Justin Clark-trainee was fourth in the Grade 1Charger Bar Handicap in her previous start and second in the Paul Ford Handicaptwo races ago. A third in the Las Damas and a fourth in the Luva Secret are theother two races during this good streak of stakes efforts. Lavish Ivory,Valiant Energy, Apolitical Pac, Apolitical Zoom, and Morethanmeetstheyecompleted the field.
