This past Sunday’s racing program was the 100th of the current night meet at Los Alamitos. With the meet hitting the century mark, there are some new faces as well as some familiar ones at the top of the standings at Los Alamitos.
The leading Quarter Horse trainer is Paul Jones once again. The second all-time leading Quarter Horse trainer here, Jones has won 58 races this season to lead John Cooper with 25 in the standings. Jones has won 3,470 Quarter Horse races in his career and he could hit the 3,500 mark this season. The all-time leader here is Blane Schvaneveldt with 3,982.
Jockey Cesar De Alba, meanwhile, has won 70 Quarter Horse races this season and appears headed to his first ever riding title. Jesus Rios Ayala is second with 53 wins. Cruz Mendez has won the Quarter Horse title each of the past four years. Del Alba has won 813 Quarter Horse races in his Los Alamitos career.
Ramon Guce is leading Vinnie Bednar in the Thoroughbred jockey race by a 47 to 40 margin. Guce, the breed’s all-time leading rider at night here with 1,018 wins, is looking for his 10th leading rider title at Los Alamitos. Bednar, who led the standings during the early part of the year, is looking for his first title.
Angela Aquino is the leading Thoroughbred trainer with 29 wins, five more than Jose Moreno. Aquino is looking to become the first woman to win a training title here of any breed.
