Just beyond the westerly wall of the far turn of the one-mile track at Los Alamitos lies a recreational retreat for those that work with horses as well as staff members at Los Alamitos Race Course staff and it comes in the form of a newly manicured soccer field. With the approval of Los Alamitos Race Course management, the field was built by and is maintained by the excellent grounds crew at Los Alamitos and it has already played host to many competitive and fun matches.

Led by Los Alamitos owner Ed Allred and with strong efforts from Los Alamitos Chief Financial Officer Rick English, Los Alamitos Plant Superintendent Frank Sherren, Los Alamitos Chief of Security Alex Soltero and Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Breeders Association Business Manager Dino Perez, the Orange County track hopes to have instill what may become a long-lasting tradition for the staff at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Since Tuesday August 23, the field has hosted a 6 vs. 6 soccer tournament consisting of teams comprised of barn area employees and Los Alamitos staff. The victorious team of the tournament will be rewarded with brand new set of soccer uniforms.

The soccer games played on this field are coordinated by Javier Gonzalez who is the Special Projects Coordinator at neighboring race track, Santa Anita Park. The organization of the games and the upcoming tournament at Los Alamitos is supported by Bob Fletcher of the Winners Foundation and Angie Carmona of California Thoroughbred Trainers. Gonzalez has had great success in organizing soccer tournaments and several other recreational activities for the staff at Santa Anita.

Gonzalez believes that organized recreational activities such as soccer are effective in providing fun and relaxation after long work days for the staff.

“It’s definitely a morale boost (for the workers),” Gonzalez added.

Gonzalez also adds that offering such activities for the barn area employees and staff is a good way to say “thank you” for their hard work and that everyone who participates enjoys the friendly competition. For more info, please call 714-820-2690.
