Jim Walker’s Zoomin For Spuds showed once again that there’s no place like Los Alamitos as far as he’s concerned. The Zoomin For Bux gelding scored his third stakes win of the year and his fourth overall stakes win at the Orange County track after winning the $20,000 Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap by a half-length on Friday night.
Zoomin For Spuds won the $126,000 Wild West Futurity last year and now he’s won the Costa Mesa Handicap, Fullerton Handicap and now the Schvaneveldt. All in all, Zoomin For Spuds has won four of six starts and run second in his other two Los Alamitos starts. Ridden by Cesar De Alba for trainer Monty Arrossa, Zoomin For Spuds also improved his record to five wins from 15 starts. He’s finished in the top three in in all but one of those starts. Zoomin For Spuds was bred in Idaho by his owner.
For Arrossa, this was his first victory in the Blane Schvanveldt. Arrossa saddled First Prize Chicks to win the Kip Didericksen Handicap earlier in the night.
“Pretty special night,” Arrossa said. “I wanted to win the Blane Schvaneveldt for a long time and won the Kip Didericksen one other time. I looked up to both of those guys. Blane was a hero of mine and Kip was awesome. It’s pretty special to win both of these races. I can’t thank Jim Walker enough for the opportunity to train this horse. I’ve had (Zoomin For Spud’s) brothers and sisters and it’s a good family. Jim and his wife, Joanne, are both great owners.”
Leaving the gate from post number two, Zoomin For Spuds controlled the race the entire way. He crossed the wire a half-length ahead of runner-up Katies Easy Moves and covered the 400-yard distance in :19.908. He earned $11,000 for the win to take his career bankroll to $95,793.
Owned by Walter Finder and O-So Smart LLC, Katies Easy Moves earned $4,500 for running second. Like Zoomin For Spuds, Katies Easy Moves has a nose for the finish line. He’s finished in the top three in 10 of his 12 career starts. Flyin Lion was third and was followed across the wire by Kissin Kate Barlow, Balata Joe Now, Shez A Motor Scooter and L Bar D Sweet Fantsy.
