Adrian Gonzalez’s Precious Dominique, the longest shot on the board at 32-1 odds, upset a field that included All American Juvenile Invitational finalist Elicity to win the $15,000 Bobbys Angel Handicap at 350 yards on Friday at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Tony Guymon and saddled by Jose Hernandez, Precious Dominique broke alertly from post number three and took the lead shortly after the start. She moved stronger with each stride and went on to score a solid half-length victory over Papas Place LLC’s Elicity. A Foose filly bred by Alessio, Brown and Davies, Precious Dominique was picking up her third win in seven career starts. She also earned $8,250 for the win to take her career earnings to $17,845. She covered the 350 yards in :17.670.
While this was her first start since being claimed for $10,000 by her current connections, Precious Dominique came into this race in razor sharp form. For her previous owners, Fortuna Properties, Inc., Precious Dominique had posted a daylight win when she was claimed on September 17. Two races ago, she beat $8,000 claimers by 1 ¼ lengths.
“We knew the (Bobbys Angel) was a tough race and the filly was coming off a couple of really good races,” Hernandez said. “We knew this was a huge step up for her. We tried to get her in allowance, but then we took a shot with her in this race. She’s a nice filly. We’ll evaluate her and see how she comes off this race and go from there. Tony Guymon fits her like a glove. She’s kind of a temperamental filly and he’s one of the best riders with horses that are kind of on the hot side.”
Ridden by Martin Arriaga for trainer Juan Aleman, Elicity earned $3,375 for running second. Myfavoritestreaker, Sagita, One Sweet Runner, Frenemy, Getting Better and Perrys Crystal completed the field.
