EG High Desert Farms’ Jess Ravin posted her fifth win and third stakes victory of the year when she defeated a strong cast of fillies and mares in the Grade 3 $25,000 Las Damas Handicap on Saturday at Los Alamitos.
One of six fillies in the Las Damas’ field of 10, Jess Ravin took the lead shortly after the start and then fended off Kevin Birrell’s homebred BF Fooserageous by ¾ lengths to win the 400-yard race. Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala from post number seven for trainer Yanet Rodriguez, Jess Ravin covered the distance in :19.703. In addition to the Las Damas, Jess Ravin also beat male sophomores in the Vandy’s Flash Handicap and sophomore fillies in the La Pacifica Handicap – both of those wins coming from along the rail. Bred by You and Me Partners, Jess Ravin also finished second in the La Primera Del Ano Derby and third in the Golden State Derby. She came into this race after a troubled start when finishing sixth in her trial to the Los Alamitos Super Derby on October 15.
“At least my filly came back well because last time in the (Super Derby) trials we didn’t have any luck,” Rodriguez said. “We were in the one hole and she sort of flipped in the gate so it wasn’t a good start. I was hoping it wouldn’t affect here and fortunately it didn’t. She came back great.
“We paid her up for the Los Alamitos Winter Championship. We’ll play it by ear and maybe try to get her a race before the trials. We’ll see what comes up, another handicap or stakes races. From there we’ll see.”
Jess Ravin could compete in the $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap for mares prior to the Winter Championship trials on January 22. Jess Ravin earned $13,750 for winning the Las Damas to take her career earnings over the $100,000 mark. Her lifetime bankroll now stands at $110,191. She’s won six of 11 career starts.
BF Fooserageous and Time For Wine finished second and third, respectively, in the Las Damas after posting big efforts on Bank of America Racing Challenge Night. Trained by Matt Fales, BF Fooserageous was second in the $202,000 Adequan Derby Challenge, while Time For Wine won the Grade 1 $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge. BF Fooserageous, which has finished first or second in all 13 of her career starts, earned $5,625 for her runner-up effort in the Las Damas. Time For Wine earned $3,125 for running third. Apollitical Zoom, Summer Dynasty, Mrs Pickens, First N Final, Favorite Bet, Jess Cuz and Lonely In Front BR completed the field.
The Las Damas Handicap will continue to be a key Autumn race for fillies and mares at Los Alamitos in 2017 in beyond. The Damas will receive a $10,000 purse increase for next season, which will make the Grade 3 event a $35,000 race. The Las Damas will be held on November 25 next year.
