For the second time this year, EG High Desert Farms’ Unclaimed Dividend surprised the field in a stakes race at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala for trainer Yanet Rodriguez, the gelding by A Mere Chocolate won the $25,000 A Ransom Handicap by a nose at odds of 8-1 while edging 15-1 shot Free Swinger in the 350 yard race on Friday night. Unclaimed Dividend covered the distance in :17.601 and earned $13,750 for the win. Earlier this year, the homebred runner beat a strong field in the Governor’s Cup Derby at 36-1 odds. That was his last victory prior to the A Ransom. Now a winner of three of 14 starts, Unclaimed Dividend has bankrolled $113,718 in his career.

Racing for Abigail Kawananakoa and trained by Paul Jones, Free Swinger earned $5,625 for running second. You Can Fly was third and was followed across the wire by Snitching, Corona Suerte, Good Looker, Boylike, Luv On The Run and Royaltys Authority. The A Ransom is named in honor of the 2000 World Champion and Champion of Champions winner. A Ransom’s trainer, Connie Hall, presented the trophy to the winning connections.
