Melinda Roche and Matt Telford of Five Livestock Company LLC made it back-to-back wins in the $16,000 Kip Didericksen Stakes after their Colorado-bred gelding Stellur posted a come-from-behind head victory over Buckshot Cartel in the 350-yard race on Friday. Ridden by Cesar De Alba for Monty Arrossa, the son of Stel Corona earned $8,800 for the win while scoring win number three from his last four starts. This was his sixth victory in 17 career outings.

“Last year we were here (in the winner’s circle) with our filly First Prize Chicks,” Roche said. “It was wonderful. She got our stakes win and she’s (now) actually at home pregnant. Stellur was Matt’s pick at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale two years ago. He’s been coming on great and maturing.”

Stellur had two straight wins against strong claimers at Los Alamitos last winter, but after running fifth against $20,000 claimers on March 4, Stellur packed his bags and hit the road for six months. He raced four different tracks during that span, which included wins at the Jerome County Fair in Jerome, Idaho and Cassia County Fair in Burley, Idaho.

“We’re from Idaho and we love coming to Los Alamitos,” Roche added. “We are 50/50 partners. I’m a veterinarian in Idaho and Matt is a cattle buyer. We got into racehorses four years ago. I had been doing the vet work for Monty Arrossa and I fell in love with the racehorses. We decided to get our own four years ago and we’ve had horses every year.”

“And now we are breeding them,” Telford added.

Jere Brinkerhoff’s Buckshot Cartel earned $3,600 for running second. Youre Gonna Mish Me, Alegendinmytime, Kipassured, and Cypress Sally completed the field.
