There is no stopping A Political Lady right now. The filly by Apollitical Jess extended her winning streak to six in a row after scoring a half-length victory over Jesstacartel in the $25,000 Vandy’s Flash Handicap for 3-year-olds on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Chris O’Dell from post six, A Political Lady was fourth at the start of the 400-yard Vandy’s Flash before finding a higher gear while sailing ahead of her foes. The Parsons Family Limited Partner-bred runner is a perfect five for five in 2018. She also won her final start of 2017 when scoring in the Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational Stakes on December 17. As a 3-year-old, A Political Lady has won the Grade 3 La Primera Del Ano Derby and the La Pacifica Handicap in addition to her victory in the Vandy’s Flash. Each of her previous four wins this year have been by daylight, which makes this half-length win her closest race of 2018.

“I had a little bit of trouble tonight during the first 100 yards,” Nicasio said. “She finished very strong. She’s strong. She’s very good. She’s one of the best fillies right now.”

“It’s not that she got bumped or anything,” O’Dell said about the trouble that A Political Lady encounter. “It was more about just getting on top of the track and getting it going. You have to get them out of the gate and get them on top of the ground. It took her a few jumps to get going. All in all, we have a clean race. She’s a very dependable horse. It’s funny that in the mornings when we stand her she doesn’t stand very well in the gate, but at night she’s pretty good. We like that.”

Owned by Parsons Ranch, A Political Lady covered the distance in :19.636 while earning $13,750 in the Vandy’s Flash. She’s now won seven of 14 career starts and has finished in the top three in all but one of those outings. A Political Lady has also earned $251,703 during her career.

“We’re debating on whether to spend some money and go in the (Grade 1) Los Alamitos Super Derby, but we have to make a decision tonight,” O’Dell added. “Then she’s in the Golden State Derby.”

Lesley Joyner’s Jesstacartel entered with a four-race win streak of his own. The Utah-bred gelding by One Sweet Jess made his last start when winning the Corona Chick Handicap on November 18. Jesstacartel trailed all but one horse during the early going of the Vandy’s Flash before flying late to earn $5,625 for running second. His runner-up money took his career tally to $43,325.

Ronnie Brooks Keller’s Twisted Sifter finished third and was followed by CM Boom Shakalaka, Jess My Kiss, McFarland USA, and Luxor Of Appeals MV. Jess My Kiss was making his first start since winning the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby in February.
