Cesar Dabdoub’s Ali Babe Foose (left) posted the fastest qualifying time to the Grade 1, $1,878,475 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, California’s richest race of any breed in 2018, thanks to a runaway 3 ½ length victory in the fifth of 13 trials on Sunday.

Ali Babe Foose was one of several impressive winners on the marathon night of 400 yard trials, as Governor’s Cup Futurity winner Powerful Favorite and Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity winner Flash And Roll also posted memorable wire-to-wire wins. With those outstanding individual performances plus impressive winning efforts by Matthew Dunn’s Apollitical Pence and Ed Allred’s Transcend, the 24th running of the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity could be one of the best finals ever in the stakes history.

A total of 107 Quarter Horses competed on trial night with the horses with the 10 fastest times advancing to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity final. Here is the complete list of qualifiers to the December 16 final: Ali Babe Foose (:19.622), Powerful Favorite (:19.657), Apollitical Pence (:19.702), Transcend (:19.754), Flash And Roll (:19.755), Deceiver (:19.756), Dexxter (:19.785), Mister Appolitical (:19.794), Seaduction (:19.823), and Lethal Lil (:19.842).

The Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity will also be part of a special Champions Double wager that will take place over a two-day span on December 15-16. The Grade 1 Champion of Champions on Saturday, December 15 will serve as the opening leg of the Champions Double, while the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity will be the closing leg on Sunday, December 16.

Ridden by Jose Nicasio for trainer Jaime Gomez, Ali Babe Foose delivered an early knockout punch on his rivals, as he opened up a 1 ½ length lead just a few strides out of the gate. From there, the Foose colt just glided over the Los Alamitos racing surface, moving 2 ¼ lengths ahead of his closest pursuer with a 110 yards to go in the race and eventually winning the trial by more than three lengths.

“This horse is a colt and sometimes he gets a little mad when the jockey warms him up,” Gomez said. “I’ve told Nicasio just to jog him, leave him alone, and don’t warm him up. This horse behaved pretty well in the gates. He broke nicely and from there it was all over. He was gone. When this horse is gone he’s not going to stop. He loves the distance. The owner, Cesar Dabdoub, is a heck of a guy. I’m really happy that he has a horse in the final. He’s one of the best owners in the business as far as I’m concerned.”

Meanwhile, Gomez remains one of the most successful trainers ever in the history of million dollar futurities at Los Alamitos. Gomez has saddled the winners of two Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, first with Corona Cartel in the second running of this race in 1996 and most recently with the champion filly J Fire Up last year. He’s also won four Golden State Millions and three Ed Burke Millions.

Bred by Dr. Steve Burns, Ali Babe Foose is one of 23 winners from 30 starters out of the great Babe On The Fly, who ranks among the all-time leading broodmares of money earners with over $2.5 million, Babe On The Fly is the dam of Grade 1 winners Rock You and Little Talks and of stakes winners Fly Thru The Fire, Carne Vino and JM Specialwynn. Ali Babe Foose is a full-brother to Grade 1 Ruidoso Derby and Grade 1 All American Gold Cup winner Rock You and a half-brother to the other standouts mentioned above. Ali Babe Foose won the Ed Burke Memorial Juvenile, finished fifth in the Golden State Million, and eighth in a very troubled trip in PCQHRA Breeders Futurity.
