Career Profile: Only 25-years-old, Danny Montes has been around racing for a longtime. The native of Whittier, California, Montes groomed horses and was a gallop boy for the likes of Leonard Duncan
and Chris O'Dell at Los Alamitos. He was also an assistant trainer in Jose Flores' barn before the opportunity to work for Scott Merrill came up. "Scott had his horses in Jose's barn, but Scott wanted
to ship them all over the place," he said. "Jose recommended me for the job and I've been doing it ever since." Montes became a traveling man of sorts beginning in 2001, saddling horses for Merrill in Idaho, Colorado and New Mexico just to name a few spots. Montes has been back at Los Alamitos for the past couple of years and is now looking forward to campaigning his two promising distance stars, Tristans Boot and Boot N It. "They are both eligible to the Gold Rush Derby trials (on May 5)," he said. "I was happy with the way they performed when they finished first and second in the Calyx Handicap. We knew that Tristans Boot was going to show a lot of speed. He had a little bit of hard time taking the turn but luckily he had a good lead at that point. Boot N It also had some trouble taking the turn but he finished nicely. Tristans Boot was bred to go this distance," Danny added. He is out of the Thoroughbred mare Festival Star. One of her sons is a Thoroughbred stakes winner at Ruidoso Downs. Festival Star was a speedy mare. Tristans Boot has shown some of that speed.
