One of the most prestigious Quarter Horse racing nights of the year is on tap as the 16th running of California Breeders Champions Night will offer a full evening of stakes races on Saturday, July 25. The racing action will be headed by the running of the $394,500 Governorís Cup Futurity, which features a pair of Ed Burke Million Futurity finalists in the form of Sale Topper and Budder Think Twice, plus the $195,000 Governorís Cup Derby headed by Grade 3 derby winners Forget It and Back In Front.

To go along with Governorís Cup Series, 10 stakes will be contested as part of Champions Night. The card will feature a total of three Pick Four wagering opportunities. The early Pick Four will feature races 1-4, the middle Pick Four will be races 5-8, and the late Pick Four will be races 9-12. California Breeders Champions Night will once again serve as a showcase event for the finest California-bred runners in training. Featuring combined purses of $897,000, the event is the product of joint cooperation between the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association and track management at Los Alamitos Race Course.

The Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap is the main event for older horses and will feature a purse of $100,000. The compact field will feature the superstar Moonist, the 3-year-old champion gelding in 2014, plus 2013 World Champion Last To Fire, winner of that yearís Champion of Champions.

While the fields to the Governorís Cup Futurity and Governorís Cup Derby were set during trial races on the weekend of July 11 and 12, and the Spencer Childers attracts many of the top older horses on the grounds, horses in various racing divisions were nominated to the other stakes events that make up Champions Night.

The result is an outstanding night of Quarter Horse racing with top stars like Grade 1 winner Quirky heading the $40,000 Matron Stakes; multiple stakes winner New Look leading the way in the $25,000 Sprint Stakes; and Corona Chick Handicap winner A Goddess Thru Fire headlining the $25,000 Jens List Memorial California Breeders Stakes. Ten juveniles will be in action in the $25,000 California Breeders Freshman Stakes for colts and geldings headed by the highly touted Snitching and recent allowance winner Luv On The Run, while seven 2-year-old fillies featuring the likes of Kindergarten Futurity finalists Joyous and Marko Czech will compete in the $25,000 Freshman Fillies Stakes.

Sophomore fillies will be in action in the $25,000 Debutante Stakes headed by La Primera Del Ano Derby third place finisher Skinny Jeans and Tustin Handicap winner The Perfect Love. The program will include feature four claiming stakes races.


This Saturday night at Los Alamitos on-track patrons with a paid admission will receive this FREE ďThe Stars of Quarter Horse RacingĒ T-Shirt celebrating California Breeders Champions Night. The free shirt will feature four outstanding Cal-bred runners headed by champion and four-time derby winner Moonist. Quirky, one of the top aged mares in the nation, will also be featured, as will Governorís Cup Futurity fastest qualifier Sale Topper and Governorís Cup Derby finalist Forget It.
