OUTSTANDING CARD SET FOR CALIFORNIA BREEDERS CHAMPIONS
One of the most prestigious Quarter Horse racing nights of the year is on tap as the 18th running of California Breeders Champions Night will offer a full evening of stakes races on Saturday, July 29. The racing action will be headed by the running of the $400,000 Governorís Cup Futurity, which annually features some of the top 2-year-olds on the grounds, plus the running of the $200,000 Governorís Cup Derby. The 2016 Governorís Cup Futurity featured eventual Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity winner Worth Doing and eventual Governorís Cup winner AJS Anna Smoke.
To go along with Governorís Cup Series, nine stakes will be contested as part of Champions Night. California Breeders Champions Night will once again serve as a showcase event for the finest California-bred runners in training. Featuring combined purses of nearly $900,000, the event is the product of joint cooperation between the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association and track management at Los Alamitos Race Course.
The Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap is the main event for 3-year-old and upward and will feature a purse of $100,000. The 2016 running went to Flay, the first 3-year-old to win the Spencer Childers since Be A Bono in 2004. While the fields to the Governorís Cup Futurity and Governorís Cup Derby were set during trial races on the weekend of July 8 and 9, and the Spencer Childers attracts many of the top horses on the grounds, horses in various racing divisions were nominated to the other stakes events that make up Champions Night on Friday, July 29.
The result is an outstanding night of Quarter Horse racing with top stars participating in the Matron Stakes and runners of all ages competing in a great variety of races. The program will include feature four claiming stakes races.

The first 3,000 patrons will receive a free Los Alamitos Western Buckle with their paid nighttime admission on Champions Night. Limit is one per patron. The Los Alamitos Western Buckle is made by nationally respected Montana Silversmiths.
Los Alamitos will also host a live-bankroll handicapping contest during the Champions Night card. The top 2 finishers will earn berths to the 2018 National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas.
