Stakes placed in four previous races this year, Nancy Scane’s Skinny Jeans (photo on left)is finally a stakes winner after holding off a talented group of 3-year-old fillies in the $16,000 Luva Secret Handicap on Friday at Los Alamitos.

Bred by Nancy’s husband, Fred Scane, Skinny Jeans was a very appropriate winner of the Luva Secret. The 330-yard dash was named in honor of Spencer Childers’ 1996 Golden State Futurity winning homebred. Coincidentally, Skinny Jeans’ pedigree traces back to the timeless breeding program of the legendary Childers.

“Ed Allred always talks to me about the bloodlines and the breeding of Spencer’s horses,” said Fred Scane. “When Spencer passed away I decided that I wanted a horse from that family of horses. Skinny Jeans is from that family. Her mother is Sables Sixty Six and Sables Sixty Six’s mother is Sables Secret.”

Owned and bred by Childers, Sables Secret was a multiple stakes winner at Los Alamitos in the early 1990s, giving Childers wins in the 1992 Dash For Cash Futurity and the 1993 La Primera Del Ano Derby. Like most of Childers’ homebreds, Sables Secret’s breeding dates back to the great Hall of Fame blue-hen mare Black Easter Bunny, the 1952 champion 3-year-old filly, which Childers purchased from trainer Walt Culbertson in 1957. Black Easter Bunny became Childers’ foundation mare and her famous offspring included champion Bunny`s Bar Maid. The gelding Luva Secret descends from Bunny`s Bar Boy, a full brother to Bunny`s Bar Maid.

“Sables Sixty Six’s first foal was the stakes placed runner Ima Foose,” added Scane, referring to the runner-up in this year’s Matron Stakes. “Skinny Jeans is Sables Sixty Six’s second foal. We also have a yearling full sister to (both Skinny Jeans and Ima Foose) that we’ll race next year. Sables Sixty Six also has a weanling colt by Favorite Cartel and she’s in foal to Walk Thru Fire.”

Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio and trained by Patricia Visscher, Skinny Jeans beat a strong field in the Luva Secret. Covering the distance in :16.902, the Foose filly held off Allred’s Blabber by a nose. Double Bar S Ranch’s Jess Cuz, the runner-up in the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap in her last start, finished a neck back in third place. Political Chick, The Perfect Love, Smile N Wave, and Valiant Energy completed the field. The last place finisher in this race was only ¾ lengths behind the winner.

“This was a great race,” Scane said. “Skinny Jeans was a four times stakes placed runner coming into this race so it’s great to know that she’s finally a stakes winner.”

In her career, Skinny Jeans has now finished third or better in 10 of her 11 outings. In addition to her win in the Luva Secret, she had been second to Take A Look in the La Pacifica Handicap and second to Blabber in the California Breeders Debutante. Skinny Jeans also ran third in both the La Primera Del Ano Derby and Garden Grove Handicap.

“Skinny Jeans had not raced since (July 25), while Blabber and Jess Cuz ran in the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap (on September 27),” Visscher noted. “Skinny Jeans had that little break and I think it helped her a lot of tonight.”

Skinny Jeans earned $8,800 for the win to take her career earnings to $65,014. She improved to four wins in 11 starts.
