A close second to stablemate Knocking On The Door in the Autumn Handicap on October 10, Ed Allred’s Nymph would not be denied in her second appearance in a stakes race, as the lightly raced filly easily dominated nine rivals in the $25,000 Corona Chick Handicap Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Trained by Scott Willoughby, the Allred-bred Nymph was in command right from the start, breaking swiftly from post number five on the way to a wire-to-wire ¾ length victory over stablemate For Pee Jay. Nymph was sent off at odds of 7-1, while For Pee Jay was 8-1.

“Nymph is a really good filly,” said Willoughby of the winner of two of four career starts. “She almost won her last start (the Autumn Handicap), but she had a lot of trouble early on before finishing strongly. This time my other filly in the race, Womanish, got wiped out at the start. I thought I had a chance to finish 1-2 in this race, but I thought my other filly would be one of those top finishers.”

Ridden by Rodrigo Aceves, Nymph covered the 400 yards in :20.055 while the $13,750 she earned for this win doubled her career earnings to $23,755. A Foose filly out of the Separatist mare Elans Last, Nymph is from the family of 1987 All American Futurity winner Elans Special and 1981 Kindergarten Futurity winner Dash Again. For Aceves, the Quarter Horse stakes win was the 93rd of his career at Los Alamitos. The 35-year-old is now tied with great Danny Cardoza for 8th place in the all-time list of stakes wins by a jockey at the Orange County track.

Owned and bred by Allred, For Pee Jay has finished out of the money just once in her seven-race career. Also sired by Foose, For Pee Jay came into this race after third place finish in an allowance race when facing the stakes winner Luv On The Run. Ridden by Eulices Gomez, who also piloted a pair of winners on the night, For Pee Jay earned $5,625 for finishing in second place.

Alipio Burgos’ Chalala Jess, the 9-5 favorite, finished third after veering in at the start. The Felix Gonzalez-trained filly came into the race after a second place finish in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. Kotur, Tickle Ur Fancy, Otta Be A Prize, Misleader, Womanish, and Swiper B Sonic completed the field.
