Fresh off his victory in the El Primero Del Ano Derby on April 2, Eva Carrasco’s Stelfast posted his third victory of the year while defeating a field that included Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity winner Lotta Blues Man in the $25,000 Dillingham Handicap on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Valentin Zamudio, Stelfast had a big lead on the field right from the start, enjoying a length advantage early on before cruising to a half-length win in the 400-yard race. The Stel Corona colt covered the distance in :19.740, a time that 14/100ths of a second faster than his winning time in the El Primero final. The Paul Jones and Marcello Jorge-bred colt earned $13,750 for his Dillingham win to take his career earnings to $178,332.

Lucky Seven Ranch’s Lotta Blues Man, which ran in all three of the million dollar futurities contested at Los Alamitos last year, never quite settled after entering the starting gate and found himself in last place once the gate opened. Lotta Blues Man finished eighth in what was his first start since running second to Worth Doing in last year’s Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity.

With Stelfast and Lotta Blues Man among the horses in the field, this year’s Dillingham Handicap was one of the strongest in the event’s history. Denny and Sandy Weigt’s Bannister crossed the wire in second place, edging the El Primero runner-up That Rico by a nose. Bannister, the winner of the Wild West Futurity in 2016 and this year’s James Smith Handicap, earned $5,625 for running second. Paul Jones and Thompson Racing’s That Rico picked up $3,125 for his third place finish. Favorite Aquaholic, On The Go, Myfavoritestreaker, Hold Sway and Lotta Blues Man completed the field.

A pair of promising juveniles scored impressive win in their racing debuts on Saturday at Los Alamitos. Legacy Ranch’s homebred colt Platki was a daylight winner at 300 yards in the fourth race, crossing the wire a length ahead of Mr Captain America in a time of :15.629. Traned by Terry Knight, Platki is a full brother to 2010 AQHA champion 2-year-old filly Flying Fig. The latter was the runner-up in that year’s Ed Burke Million, Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Platki is a colt by Corona Cartel out of Tender Flyer.

Rosenthal Ranch LLC’s Effortless Effort, a $19,000 purchase at the 2016 Los Alamitos Equine Sale, won the sixth race on Saturday by 1 ¼ lengths in a time of :15.625. The Steve Burns-bred mare is a half-brother to Rainbow Derby and All American Derby finalist Smokey Stones. Effortless Effort is also a sibling of Retama Park Futurity finalist Angelina Ballerina. Chris O’Dell saddled Effortless Effort, a gelding by Favorite Cartel and out of Madonna Effort.
