Martha Wells’ homebred Yanque knocked it out of the park in his trial to the $129,100 Wild West Futurity, as he flew from post number four on the way to the fastest qualifying time on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Matt Fales, Yanque scored a 1 ¾ length victory in the first of four Wild West trials, while covering the 350-yards in :17.682. His winning time was 15/100ths faster than the second fastest qualifier Moonie Blues’ :17.833. A total of 32 runners competed in the trials with the horses with the 10 fastest times moving on to the Wild West final on Sunday, October 29.

Sent off as the 1-5 favorite, Yanque did not disappoint as he led comfortably from start to finish. He came into the trials as one of the favorites to qualify based on his solid local resume. The Favorite Cartel gelding qualified to the Governor’s Cup Futurity during the summer and came into this race after winning The Plan Handicap on September 8. He made a pair of starts at Turf Paradise at the beginning of his career.

Lisa Anderson’s Moonie Blues also dominated her heat, as she took off like a rocket out of the gate to establish a two length advantage. It was never in doubt from there for the Jaime Gomez-trainee. Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala, the daughter of Freighttrain B crossed the wire two lengths ahead of her competition.

Hernan Torres and Chris Carpenter’s L Bar D Classic Trip and Freddy Ibarra’s Warhock also won their respective trials and will be joining the two likely favorites in the final. The complete list of qualifiers is as follows: Yanque (:17.682), Moonie Blues (:17.833), Favorite Fire Boy (:17.939), CM Once In A Bluemoon (:17.951), Krash Your Party (:17.999), Warhock (:18.015), PF Paddy Dashair (:18.026), Cowgirl N Up (:18.09), L Bar D Classic Trip (:18.104), and R Sturdy Boy (:18.122).
