Parsons Ranch’s A Political Lady added another win to her perfect 2018 campaign after cruising to a 1 ¼ length win in the $30,000 La Pacifica Handicap for 3-year-old fillies on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Chris O’Dell, A Political Lady is now a perfect four for four during her sophomore campaign. She also went over $100,000 in earnings for the year, as her first place check of $16,500 in the La Pacifica took her bankroll to 2018 to $103,046. For her career, the daughter of Apollitical Jess has won six of 13 outings with earnings of $237,957. She’s hit the board in all but one career start. A Political Lady, who covered the 350 yards in :17.50, came into the La Pacifica after winning the Grade 3, $184,000 La Primera Del Ano Derby by 1 ¼ lengths on March 30. Each of her four wins this season have been by daylight. A Political Lady also won her final outing of 2017 when outdueling Twenty One Gunz by a nose to win the $30,000 Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational Stakes at 400 yards. Of her five wins during this winning streak, three have come at the 400 yard distance.

“I’m speechless. She’s blossomed into a really good filly,” O’Dell said. “Cody Jensen rode her last year and she did really well. He kept telling me how good she was. (Cody) went to Ruidoso Downs to ride and Eduardo Nicasio ended up picking up the mount. He’s fit her like a glove. They’ve done really well. Eduardo thought this race was pretty easy, but it was a bonus being on the outside. We don’t get bumped and it’s like being in the fast lane. She likes being out there. She doesn’t like being (by the rail). When we drew the outside, I knew she had a good chance. We’re going to try and go for six in a row next.”

The La Pacifica lineup also featured John Firth’s Hard Headed Chick, the second place finisher in the La Primera, and Mauro Eli Zaborowky’s Yashira Vista, a three-time winner in Brazil, but it was the 12-1 longshot On Our Way who finished second behind A Political Lady.

“I was worried about two or three other horses in there,” O’Dell added. “They’re all tough, but I was worried about the filly from Brazil, plus Hard Headed Chick is really nice and so is Chowchilla Chickadee. There were some good horses in there, but (A Political Lady) proved she was the best tonight.

“We got some derbies coming up for her and if things keep going well, we might even supplement her into the Los Alamitos Super Derby. You never know. She’s paid into a few other derbies. I think she’s better the farther she goes. She needed this race. It came in the right time. She’s been ready for two to three weeks for something. I was either going to work her or run her and it just happens that this stakes race came up. It was really good timing for us.”

Lazy Creek Ranch and Jerry McAlevey’s On Our Way, a finalist to the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity last year, earned $6,750 for running second. Jose Flores saddled the daughter of One Sweet Jess. Hard Headed Chick eanred $3,750 for running third. The top three were followed across the wire by Yashira Vista, Chowchilla Chickadee, La Sierran, Madam Of Fire Mv, and Terrific Temptation.

The nine race card also featured a 550-yard allowance event won by Ed Allred’s distance stakes winner Bound To Bet in a time of :27.30. The 300-yard allowance event went to Missmerizing, the winner of the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes earlier this year. In the 2-year-old ranks, Jeff and Kim Pitcher’s Wave Her Down, a full-sister to Champion of Champions winner Wave Carver and Ocean Runaway, won her debut on Saturday night in a 300-yard time of :15.735. The other freshman race went to Jesus Villalobos’ Sad Face Emoji, who upset her rivals at 25-1 odds. He covered the 300 yards in :15.784.
