Tony and Aubrey Greaves’ homebred gelding Mister FDD held off a strong challenge from Mesa Valley Farms LLC’s Bolt For Gold to win the $25,000 Corona Chick Handicap at 400 yards in wire-to-wire fashion on Friday at Los Alamitos.

Mister FDD has been in top form at the Orange County oval with two victories from three career starts. He won his trial to the Wild West Futurity on October 7 and then finished third to the talented KR Hi Five in the $137,000 final on October 28. For his career, the Utah-bred gelding by FDD Dynasty has now won four of eight career starts. Ridden by Cesar Franco for trainer Lin Melton, Mister FDD covered the distance in :20.052.

“My husband Tony and I raised this (gelding).  He’s really special to us. Our son named him Little George. That’s been his barn name his whole life. He’s just a special horse. We’re happy to have him. It’s exciting every time he runs whether he wins or not. We’ve known Lin for a long time. He’s a great guy. We wouldn’t have picked anybody else.

“They send him to me about two months ago,” Melton added. “Jordan Hadley broke him. Mister FDD ran in the All American Futurity trials and ran well. He didn’t have much luck up there. He’s a dream to have around the barn. He makes you kind of nervous because he’s really quiet but when he comes out to the racetrack, even in the mornings, he’s all business.”

Tony and Audrey Greaves enjoyed stakes success here before with their Utah homebred PF Flyair. With Jordan Hadley in saddle, PF Flyair was a two-time winner of the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap at Los Alamitos.

For Franco, this was the up-and-coming rider’s first ever Quarter Horse stakes victory. Earlier this year, he piloted Striver to a runner-up effort in the Grade 2 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity. Mister FDD earned $13,750 for running second to take his lifetime bankroll to $45,767. Ridden by Erasmo Gasca for trainer Mark Skeen, Bolt For Gold earned $5,625 for his second place finish. Mommas Dynasty, Bf Farmhand, Arizona Favorite, and Cupids Affair completed the field.
