Bobby Cox’s Total Change spoiled Twisted Sifter’s bid for a fine nine wins in 2018 with a powerful wire-to-wire victory in the $25,000 A Ransom Handicap for 3-year-olds on Friday at Los Alamitos.

Sent off at 11-1 odds, Total Change broke alertly from post number five and sailed from there to score a half-length victory at 350 yards in :17.724. Bred by Ed Allred, the Walk Thru Fire gelding was picking up his second victory in a row following a similar victory in an allowance race on November 9. Jose Nicasio piloted Total Change for trainer Jaime Gomez.

“Jaime has done a great job with this horse,” Nicasio said. “He’s training him a little differently and that’s really help this horse relax. The horse can be a little nervous so Jaime has taken his time with this horse in the mornings. I think that’s helped the horse.”

A 2016 Los Alamitos Equine Sale graduate, Total Change is a full brother to multiple graded stakes winner New Look and multiple Grade 1 stakes finalist Renewed. All three of these talented males are out of Make Over, whose mother is 1987 All American Futurity winner Elans Special. Total Change earned $13,750 for the win to more than double his career earnings to $27,243.

Owned by Ronnie Brooks Keller, Twisted Sifter came up short in his effort to become the first Quarter Horse with nine victories in a single year since the champion Moonist accomplished the feat in 2014. Twisted Sifter, a gelding by FDD Dynasty, remains the nation’s lone Quarter Horse with eight victories with 24 days left in 2018. One has to go back to Duplicate Dasher’s 2008 campaign to find another Quarter Horse with nine victories in single season. There’s still one week remaining for the current meet at Los Alamitos with a new meeting opening up on Friday, December 28. Ridden by Jonathan Roman for trainer Roman Figueroa, Twisted Sifter earned $5,625 for his second place finish. Jazzy Icon, On Our Way, Jd Wagon Boss and Better Than Ever completed the field.
