Owned by Caballo Rapido LLC and Five Livestock Company LLC, Katies Easy Moves successfully defended his title in the $35,000 First Down Dash Handicap after holding off Kaweah Bar Handicap winner Royaltys Authority by a neck in the 400-yard race for older horses on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Katies Easy Moves won his first ever stakes race at Los Alamitos in last year’s First Down Dash and has since developed into a legitimate Grade 1 contender. Since that victory, the son of Maknmoves out of Katie Lane Finder has finished fourth in both the Grade 1 Vessels Maturity and Grade 1 Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship and second in the Grade 1 Bank of America Challenge Championship. The 5-year-old Utah-bred has won 14 of 30 starts and has hit the board in 23 outings. He’s earned over $191,658.

“We’ve been so close all year long,” said Curtis Earll of Caballo Rapido LLC. “Our goal was to get into the Champion of Champions. We were so close. It didn’t work out, but there’s always next year.”

A race like the trials to the Grade 1 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship in late January could be in the cards for Katies Easy Moves, who earned $19,250 for the win.  Eduardo Nicasio piloted Katies Easy Moves, who covered the 400 yards in :19.716, for trainer Monty Arrossa.

“We actually purchased this horse for $2,000 when he was just a 2-year-old before he even ran,” added Jennifer Earll. “It’s just been an amazing ride. He’s just so much fun to watch and follow. We thought it was an expensive hobby, but he’s paying off. It’s been great. It’s been wonderful. We couldn’t ask for better partners, a better trainer, Monty is amazing, (jockey) Eduardo is fantastic. It’s a dream come true. This is kind of a once in a lifetime horse for us.”

Racing for S&S Horses, Royaltys Authority led for the first few steps of this race before Katies Easy Moves took the lead. Nevertheless, the Roman Figueroa-trained sprinter was game throughout on the way earning $7,875 for his second place finish. Ruben Lozano piloted Royaltys Authority. Firing Tools, Well Good, Corona Jumpim Mrl, Chicks Fayvorite and Joe Legacy completed the field.
