Trainer Jesus Nunez will start the weekend’s racing action one win away from becoming the 19th trainer in Los Alamitos history to reach 500 Quarter Horse victories. Over the years, Nunez has also won 366 races Thoroughbred races at Los Alamitos and has been this track’s leading trainer with the breed each of the past two years. He’s also Los Alamitos’ third all-time leading Thoroughbred trainer.

            Nunez will saddle a pair of Quarter Horses on Friday night. In the fourth race, he’ll send out the EG High Desert Farms’ 3-year-old filly Firebrand, who is 12-1 on the morning line. Nunez will also saddled EG High Desert’s Eagles Policy, who is part of a very competitive seventh race on Friday. The gelding is the fourth choice on the morning line at 7-2 odds.

            In 2018, Nunez saddled Jess Ravin to victory in the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap. The trainer also saddled the champion Buccaneer Beach to victory in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Championship in 2004. In his career, Nunez has won nine graded stakes and 22 total stakes.


             Jockey Edgar Orozco has a broken clavicle and will be out of action approximately 3-4 months. He was injured in a spill on Sunday night. Vinnie Bednar, who was also involved in the spill, was released from the hospital on Sunday night and was only experiencing some soreness. He could ride on Sunday evening, but will most likely return to action next weekend to be part of the trials to the Los Alamitos Winter Derby and Winter Championship.
