Following St. Reno's 870-yard victory here last weekend, trainer Lorenzo Ruiz hopes to have another winner at this distance when he sends out George Castanares' Great Ma Neri in a $12,000 allowance race on Saturday night at Los Alamitos. Seven Thoroughbreds will be in action in the 870-event for non-winners of two races.

Great Ma Neri pulled away from her rivals when winning a maiden special weight race during the LA County Fair Meet at Los Alamitos on September 20. After running third in a Del Mar race in November, she faded to finish out of the money when returning to Los Alamitos during the daytime Winter Thoroughbred meet. Those races ranged from five to 5 to 5 1/2 furlongs so Ruiz will look for Great Ma Neri to take advantage of the shorter 870-yard distance. Efrain Hernandez will ride the 4-year-old from the outside post seven.

The field will also feature recent impressive maiden winners Maahes, Madame Jeanette, Malena and Gayebird and Love Is All U Need. Madame Jeanette posted the most recent of those wins, as she cruised to a five-length win on December 28. Papas Jerry's Girl, who arrives here after racing at Golden Gate will complete the field.

The Quarter Horse feature is an $11,825 allowance at 100 yards in Saturday’s eighth race. The field will include Martha Wells' Jazzy Icon, who ran third in the A Ransom Handicap at 350 yards on December 7. Ed Allred's Light Of The Moon, who has finished third at this distance in her last three starts, is another speedster to watch, as is Fawna Knight's allowance winner Beach Bumn Foose, who has hit the board in 12 of 15 career starts. The gelding has been on the lead at the first point of call in five out of his last seven starts.
