It was a busy morning of 2-year-old gate workouts on Saturday, March 16 with 26 juveniles leaving the gate from the 220 yard mark at Los Alamitos Race Course.
This space will take a look at seven of the morning’s participants starting with O Yes I Can, who posted the bullet work of :12.3 for trainer Paul Jones and Bradbury Family. Sired by Good Reason SA and out Shazooms Dolls, the Colorado-bred filly O Yes I Can outworked her rival by more than a length while racing from the outside post. Bred by Tom Bradbury and Marvin Willhite, Shazooms Doll won six races and earned $92,622. The multiple stakes winner took first in the Grade 3 Rocky Mountain Futurity and Grade 3 Cherry Creek Futurity in 2007 and also qualified to the Grade 2 Kansas Futurity. Shazooms Doll is the dam of Who You Know, the winner of the $160,000 Mile High Futurity in 2016 and third place finisher in both the Rocky Mountain and Cherry Creek futurities.
Jones also worked a Stel Corona colt named Wrong Impression, who sharply posted a :12.4 clocking while working from the outside. Out of Fool The Boys, Wrong Impression is a full brother to California Breeders Freshman Fillies winner Misleader. A winner of $31,805 in her racing career, Fool The Boys finished second Tailgunner Tom in the 2008 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes. Her dam is three-time graded derby winner Girl Secrets.
Girl Secrets is also the dam of the unraced broodmare Girls Choice, who is the dam of the multiple graded stakes winning mare Kiddy Up Cowgirl, who scored victories in the 2018 Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap and 2017 Grade 3 PCQHRA Breeders Derby. Girls Choice is also the dam of the Kiddy Up colt Up Is Up (photo), a 2-year-old who covered the 220 yards in :12.5 when narrowly winning his drill over the Favorite Cartel colt Close To It (:12.6) on Saturday morning. James Glenn, Jr. trains both Up Is Up and Close To It.
Another notable 2-year-old to work on Saturday is Corona Required, who was $140,000 repurchase at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale last year. Sired by Corona Cartel and out No Tools Required, Corona Required is a half-brother of stakes winner One Hot Mecanic ($158,557), stakes winner Required Fire ($71,235) and stakes placed runner Firing Tool ($146,954). Their dam, No Tools Required, won nine races – and four of six starts during her freshman campaign in 2001 – while also winning the TQHA Sires Cup Futurity and Derby and the Grade 3 Rheudasil Handicap. No Tools Required finished sixth in the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity in 2001. Jose Flores trains Corona Required.
The Mike Robbins-trainee Needs No Intro worked solo in :12.50. The Utah-bred colt by One Famous Eagle is out of the multiple Grade 1 winner Separate Fire. The AQHA champion 2-year-old filly in 2011, Separate Fire won the Grade 1 winner Kindergarten Futurity and Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity during her championship campaign. She earned $631,250 on the racetrack and is the sister of stakes winner Ilikethewayshewalks. This is the family of Rainbow Futurity winner Meganette. As a broodmare, Separate Fire has produced stakes winner Separatefromothers, who has earned $48,335.
Separate Boots and Baltas Babe are among the others to work in :12.5. Separate Boots is by freshman sire Seperate Interest and out of the champion Pink Boots RM, the winner of the Governor’s Cup Derby in 2010 and runner-up to Merridoc Hawk in that year’s Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap. Pink Boots RM was named the AQHA champion 3-year-old filly in 2010. Legacy Ranch’s Baltas Babe outworked stablemate Just Call Pam when the pair worked in :12.5/:12.6. Baltas Babe is a filly by Favorite Cartel and out of Play Your Card, while Just Call Pam is by Corona Cartel also out of Play Your Card. A multiple allowance winner at Los Alamitos in 2010, Play Your Card is the daughter of Docs First Card, a blue-hen producer of champion Secret Card and major stakes winner Docs Apollo and Twin Spires.
