Impressive wins by Scott Bryant’s champion filly Flash And Roll, who remained undefeated in five career starts at Los Alamitos Race Course, and by Rosenthal Ranch’s Powerful Favorite, who took his 2019 record to a perfect seven for seven, highlighted the trials to the Grade 1, $1,009,650 Los Alamitos Super Derby on Saturday night.

Four trials were contested at 400 yards with the horses with the 10 fastest times advancing to the Super Derby final to be held on Sunday, November 10. Flash And Roll, who won all four starts during her championship campaign here last year, posted the fastest qualifying time after covering the distance in :19.667 in the opening trial of the night. Ridden by Cody Jensen for trainer Justin Joiner, Flash And Roll scored a length victory over a field that included Heritage Place Derby winner Apollitical Pence.

A filly by First Moonflash out of the Grade 1 stakes winner Stylish Jess BR, Flash And Roll had a half-length advantage early in the race on the way to her ninth win in 12 career starts.

“She’s so quick from the gates that her speed holds up here,” said Jensen, who was riding the filly for the first time. “Speed holds really well at Los Alamitos and her quickness is a huge advantage here over when she’s run at Ruidoso. I (asked her) once or twice because I wanted to know – since I’ve never ridden her before - how she would respond. I wanted to know how she would react in the final when you have to really ask her what she’s got. I liked what I saw from her tonight. I was able to just sit on her and let her cruise down through there.”

Last year, Flash And Roll won the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity while also scoring the trials to those two races. As a result, the Julianna Hawn Holt-bred filly was named the AQHA overall champion 2-year-old and champion 2-year-old filly. Flash And Roll earned $3,300 for the win to take her career earnings to $1,265,665.

Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Chris O’Dell, Powerful Favorite simply overwhelmed his rivals when leading by daylight virtually from gate to wire in the final trial of the night. The son of Favorite Cartel out of the Grade 1 winner Remember Me Rose crossed the wire a length ahead of Hot Little Kiddy while posting the third fastest time of :19.768. Powerful Favorite will now eye his fourth derby win of the year at Los Alamitos. He has previously won the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby, Grade 3 El Primero Del Ano Derby and Governor’s Cup Derby. Bred by James Markum and Dr. Steve Burns, Powerful Favorite has now won 10 of 16 career starts.

Owned and bred by J. Garvan Kelly, Nancy Yearsley, and Lloyd Yother, Symbol Of Faith posted the second fastest qualifying time of :19.753 following her 27-1 upset victory in the second trial. Ridden by Carlos Huerta for trainer Juan Aleman, Symbol Of Faith finished a neck in front of Dexxter in a strong trial that featured Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap winner Tequila Sangria and the stakes placed derby finalists Chocolatito and Favorite Motion.

“Every time she goes out, she gives it all she can,” Kelly said of the Tac It Like A Man filly. “We were a little bit concerned because the Ruidoso trip took a little bit out of her. She turned the corner in the last few weeks. The Super Derby was our main race all year. We like running at Los Alamitos. The conditions are so fair with the wind factor and the fairness of the racing. My partners and I love to run here. I’m just so happy for them, our team here and at the farm. This means a lot to all of us.”

Bobby Simmons’ Especially Tres Pyc was first across the wire in the third trial at 8-1 odds. His winning time of :19.863 gave him the ninth fastest qualifying time of the night. Ridden by Jairo Rangel and trained by Paul Jones, the son of PYC Paint Your Wagon was picking up his second win in nine outings. This was also his first start at the Orange County track since running second in a trial to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity last year.

“The horse broke pretty good and it looked like the other horses had him beat for quite a while,” Jones said. “He sure made a really nice run at the end of it. Jairo rode hard and did a great job on him. We’re real happy with this horse. He’s really coming into his own. He’s always shown a lot of talent. He put it all together tonight. We’re happy. Bobby and his wife, Catherine, are really good people and they love the sport.”

The complete list of qualifiers to the Los Alamitos Super Derby is as follows: Flash And Roll (:19.667), Symbol Of Faith (:19.753), Powerful Favorite (:19.768), Dexxter (:19.780), Apollitical Pence (:19.814), Bail Czech (:19.831), Red Hawk Cartel (:19.848), Ali Babe Foose (:19.850), Especially Tres Pyc (:19.863), and Corona By Corona (:19.868).
