JR Stables’ homebred filly JR Prissys Blood broke sharply from post three and then held off Old School Icon by a nose to win the $25,000 Corona Chick Handicap on Saturday at Los Alamitos.
In the process, the Nevada-bred daughter of Apollitical Blood showed the winning form that she displayed at Weber Downs and Energy Downs earlier this year. That included a big victory in the Cowboy State Futurity at Energy Downs, winning the $99,681 race by a head.
Ridden by Jesus Valenzuela for trainer Monty Arrossa, JR Prissys Blood improved her lifetime record to four win in seven starts with her hard-earned victory in the Corona Chick at 400 yards. JR Prissys Blood led by a length early on and was still three-quarter lengths ahead of Old School Icon with 150 yards left to run. Old School Icon came flying late, but it came a stride or two too late, as JR Prissys Blood held on to win for the first time at Los Alamitos.
In her local debut, JR Prissys Blood ran third in The Plan Handicap before she refused at the start to race in the Autumn Handicap on October 12. The Corona Chick victory will go a long way to make up for that last effort, as she earned $13,750 for the win to take her lifetime bankroll to $57,721. The now multiple stakes winner covered the distance in :19.91.
Ridden by Jorge Bourdieu for trainer Matt Fales, Old School Icon earned $5,625 for running second. He also ran second in The Plan and was fifth in the Wild West Futurity in his most recent start. Martha Wells campaigns the gelding by Texas Icon. Zoom On Jess, winner of The Plan, ran third in the Corona Chick and was followed by John Carter Cash, Royally Significant, CM Singing The Blues and Kick It Papa Joe.
