             Eagle Empire (inside horse in photo), a colt by One Famous Eagle, and Jess Lyndes Reason, a filly by Good Reason SA, were among the talented 2-year-olds that were in action in the first morning of gate workouts Tuesday at Los Alamitos Race Course.

A total of 34 freshmen started their racing preparations for the 2020 campaign on Tuesday, a flurry headed by 24 juveniles from the barn of trainer Paul Jones and six from the barn of trainer Mike Robbins. All of Tuesday’s works are available here for viewing.

            Reliance Ranches’s Eagle Empire posted the bullet work of the morning, as the Oklahoma-bred by One Famous Eagle out of the Valiant Hero mare Belle Helene, worked the 220 yards in :12.20. The Robbins-trained colt is a full-brother to Maghelene ($58,253), a stakes winner in Canterbury and the runner-up in the 2018 Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge  Stakes. Maghelene qualified to the 2018 (G2) AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship. Belle Helene won three of 10 career starts and finished in the top two in eight of those outings. She earned $214,858 in a career that featured wins in All American Futurity trial and Ruidoso Futurity trial in 2013. She also finished second in the 2013 Rainbow Futurity and second in the 2014 Mr Jess Perry Stakes at Ruidoso Downs.  

            Eagle Empire outworked stablemate SC Divas Cartel Man on Tuesday, but the gelding by Corona Cartel out of AQHA champion Spit Curl Diva posted the morning’s second fastest time of :12.30. Also from Robbins’ barn, SC Divas Cartel Man is a half-brother to the Grade 1 stakes placed runner and stakes winner Stevie B First Cash ($238,312), multiple graded stakes placed runner SC Money Maker ($169,484),  Grade 1 stakes finalist and stakes winner SC Vapor Trail ($113,607), and Grade 2 stakes finalist SC Coronada ($40,451).

            From the Paul Jones barn, Jess Lyndes Reason stopped the clock in :12.50 while working with the Favorite Cartel filly Danjerous, who covered the distance in :12.70. Owned and bred by Turner Farms, Jess Lyndes Reason is a Texas-bred by Good Reason SA out of the 2011 All American Futurity runner-up Jess Send Me ($361,595). Jess Lyndes Reason is a half-sister to Jess Macho Corona ($609,605), the runner-up in last year’s Grade 1 All American Derby and runner-up in the 2018 (G1) Golden State Million Futurity.

            Danjerous is out of the classy Shez Jess Toxic, winner of the Grade 2 AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship and a participant in 18 stakes races during her career. Shez Jess Toxic ($235,296) finished second in the 2013 (G1) Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap and second in the 2012 (G2) Southern California Derby. Danjerous is a half-sister to the four-time Grade 1 stakes placed runner Danjer ($526,711).

            Here are other notable runners from a busy first morning of workouts:

Nonsense Coronado (filly by Coronado Cartel out of Political Nonsense - trained by Mike Robbins)  Posted the morning’s third fastest of 34 works when covering the 220 yards in :12.40 vs. Diva On Fire (:12.7). Political Nonsense ($51,668) won two of 10 starts and is from the great family of A Delightful Legacy. Political Nonsense ran second in the 2016 (G1) AQHA Distaff Challenge.  

Still Hateful (filly by Stel Corona out of Hardly Hateful - trained by Paul Jones) Outworked her company when stopping the clock in :12.60. Her dam, Hardly Hateful ($436,979), won three of eight starts while hitting the board in seven of those outings. She finished second in the 2004 (G1) Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and (G1) Rainbow Futurity. She also qualified to the (G1) Golden State Million Futurity. Still Hateful is a half-sister to 2015 (G1) All American Futurity finalist Hatefulist ($182,607).

BF Outfoosed (colt by Foose out of BF Outrageous  - trained by Paul Jones) Won her drill when outworking rival :12.6 to :13.0. Dam was a five time winner of $15,334 while competing in the Intermountain area. She won the 2003 Diamond Classic Derby in Wyoming and was fifth in the 2003 Utah Derby at Laurel Brown.   

Top Model (filly by Favorite Cartel out of Twiggy Hawkins - trained by Paul Jones) Worked to the inside of Still Hateful in a time of :12.70. Dam is a full sister to Grade 1 stakes winners BF Farm Boss ($932,655) and Strawkins ($614,156). Top Model’s granddam is the terrific mare Shirleys Strawfly, a blue-hen producer with a slew of notable sons and daughters.

Diva On Fire (filly by Walk Thru Fire out of Jess Sass Me – trained by Mike Robbins) Covered the distance in :12.70 while working with Nonsense Coronado.  Jess Sass Me is the dam of 2014 AQHA champion 2-year-old filly Jess Walking Thru ($447,266) and 2016 AQHA champion aged mare Sass Me Blue ($296,378).  Jess Sass Me is also the dam of Jess Being Valiant ($191,135), a stakes winner and runner-up in the Grade 2 Golden State Derby in 2013 and Grade 1 Vessels Maturity in 2014.

Ivan Streakin Bye (colt by Ivan James out of Jewels of Royalty – trained by Elena Andrade) Worked evenly with Cartels Comet in :12.70. His sire, Ivan James, won six of 10 starts while racing in Louisiana and Texas while earning $481,562. He won the 2016 Evangeline Downs Derby and the Firecracker Derby at Delta Downs. He also won the 2015 (G2) Sam Houston Futurity.  Jewels Royalty ($12,850) broke her maiden at Delta Downs.

Cartels Comet (colt by Corona Cartel out of Cluster of Stars – trained by Elena Andrade) Worked evenly with Cartels Come in :12.70. Dam is an undefeated, stakes winning Thoroughbred. She went seven for seven in her career with $549,600 in earnings. At Belmont Park she won the 2013 (G2) Gallant Bloom Stakes and the Iroquois Stakes. At Aqueduct, she won the (G2) Distaff Handicap. She is the mother of the Quarter Horse Bestest ($32,995), who was third in a trial to the 2018 (G1) All American Futurity and also raced in the trials to the Ruidoso Futurity, Rainbow Futurity, and Golden State Million Futurity – all Grade 1 stakes races.   

FG Jess Paintin Thru (filly by PYC Paint Your Wagon out of Jess Walkin Thru – trained by Mike Robbins) - Won her drill when covering the distance in :12.7. Jess Waking Thru was the 2014 AQHA champion 2-year-old filly after winning the Dash For Cash Futurity before running  third to 2019 AQHA World Champion He Looks Hot in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity.            

Fly The Coup (colt by Favorite Cartel out of Babe On The Fly – trained by Paul Jones) Worked evenly with Druski, as the stopwatch clocked the both in :12.80. Babe On The Fly is one of nation’s premier broodmares having produced 2018 PCQHRA champion 2-year-old colt Ali Babe Foose, Grade 1 major stakes winners Rock You ($790,325) and Little Talks ($563,897) plus 2015 (G1) Ruidoso Derby runner-up Glock ($216,170),  and stakes winners Fly Thru The Fire, who also won his All American Futurity  trials, and Carne Vino, winner of the Sprint Stakes at Los Alamitos.  

Druski (colt by Hawkinson out of Shirleys Strawfly – trained by Paul Jones) Crossed the wire in unison with Fly The Coup in :12.80. Druski is a full-brother to both BF Farm Boss and Strawkins. BF Farm Boss ($932,655) won the 2015 (G1) Ruidoso Derby and 2014 (G2) PCQHRA Breeders Futurity. He also finished second to 2019 World Champion He Looks Hot in the (G1) Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Strawkins ($614,156) was named the 2006 AQHA champion 3-year-old gelding. His record includes wins in the Grade 1 Rainbow Derby and Grade 1 Bank of America Challenge Championship.   

Suite Josephine (filly by Apollitical Jess out of Christie Jo Dash – trained by Paul Jones) – Won her drill when covering the distance in :13.0. Christie Jo Dash earned $71,058 in her career and was second in the Governor’s Cup Derby in 2006 and qualified to the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity in 2005.

Bob E McGee (colt by Tres Seis out of Dash Ta Moon – trained by Paul Jones) Worked evenly with Son Of Zorro, as they both hit the wire in :13.4. A daughter of Dash To Fame, Dash Ta Moon won six of 18 starts  with earnings of $352,305. She won the 2007 Lubbock Stakes at Zia Park, the 2006 New Mexico Fillies & Mares Championship, and the 2005 Ruidoso Quarter Horse Sale Futurity. Bob E McGee is a half-sister to Osaka Moon ($86,486), the runner-up in the 2013 (RG2) New Mexico Classic Futurity.

Son Of Zorro (colt by Tres Seis out of Foxy Moonflash – trained by Paul Jones) Worked evenly with Bob E McGee, covering the 220 yards in :13.4. Foxy Moonflash won 6 of 13 starts and earned $283,978. She was a graded stakes winner at Sunland Park and a runner-up  in the Grade 2 Zia Park Derby in 2014 plus two other state-bred graded events.
