PROSPECT RUNWAY – MAY 13-14 LOS ALAMITOS
With trials to the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity right around the corner on Sunday, May 28, the top juveniles on the grounds have already been preparing for the big night by making their required start prior to the trials.
Last weekend’s action featured four races for juveniles with the debut of Kevins Wise Corona the most anticipated 2-year-old performer of the weekend. Let’s take a brief look at the winners on Saturday and Sunday night and remember, many of these will be back for the Ed Burke Million Trials.
SATURDAY, MAY 13
Kevins Wise Corona – Owned and bred by Parsons Ranch, the KVN Corona colt looked tremendous in his morning works, posting a bullet :12.0 gate drill on April 29. On that morning, Kevins Wise Corona outworked the well-bred Dynaste who then won his racing debut on Sunday night. On the track on Saturday night, Kevins Wise Corona had to work very hard in his debut, but he got the job done, winning his first out by a half-length in a time of :15.704. Trained by Paul Jones, Kevins Wise Corona drifted out but he was strong late under the guidance of Henry Reynoso Lopez. His final 220-yards was a solid :09.82.
First Prize Spirit – Gelding by Apollitical Spirit is out of the graded stakes placed runner Ms Fast First Prize. Owned by JGA Racing Stables, First Prize Spirit won his debut at 220 yards, making up for a slow start to outduel Fervents Spirit by a nose with Jesus Rios Ayala up.
Five Bar Supreme – Ayala won two of the three races for 2-year-olds on Saturday night. In addition to First Prize Spirit, he also rode the Five Bar Cartel gelding to an easy ¾ length win in a time of :15.941. Owned by Jorge Carmona, his dam is Luv Supreme, who earned over $202,000 as a multiple graded stakes place runner. Luv Supreme was third in the 2014 (G1) Golden State Million Futurity and third in the 2015 (G2) West Texas Derby. She also qualified to the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity final in 2014.
SUNDAY, MAY 14
Dynaste – Sired by FDD Dynasty and out of the Grade 1 winner Terrific Energy, this colt is a full brother to 2012 Governor’s Cup Derby winner Terrific Synergy, 2019 La Primera Del Ano Derby winner Terrific First Down, and 2015 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity third place finisher Dynasty Energy. He also improved nicely in his debut, moving up from fifth place to win the 300-yard dash by a head in :15.988.
