FIRE WALL SURPRISES HER RIVALS TO WIN DEBUTANTE AT 15-1 ODDS
Owner Oscar Parra enjoyed his first stakes win at Los Alamitos after the Seperate Interest filly Fire Wall upset the field to win the $25,000 Debutante Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on Sunday night.
Racing from the rail as the longest price on the board at 18-1 odds, Fire Wall (photo) bumped at the start but did everything right from there in route to outdueling the odds-on favorite Remember Her by a neck to win the 350-yard dash. While this was only her second victory in 16 career start, Fire Wall has now finished in the top three a total of 10 times. Ridden by Ruben Lozano for trainer Valentin Zamudio, the Steve Burns-bred filly earned $13,750 for the win to take her career earnings to $32,367. She covered the 350 yards in :18.049.
“I was nervous for this race, and I never expected her to run this big of a race,” Parra said. “She broke very sharp and got the victory. My family has been in this for a very long time, and it means a lot to win this race.”
Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala for trainer Scott Willoughby, Remember Her earned $5,625 for running second. Howard Nichols’ Heather Denise earned $3,125 for running third. Corona Rose and Black Mesa completed the field.
READY FOR IT WINS FRESHMAN STAKES WITH A STRONG FINISH
Juniors Quarter Horses Inc’s Ready For It picked up his second win in three career starts after outdueling Winners Share in the final 100 yards to win the $25,000 Freshman Stakes on Sunday at Los Alamitos.
Ready For It was a solid winner in his racing debut back on May 6, but had a troubled trip when finishing fifth in his trial to the Ed Burke Million Futurity on May 28. A gelding by Favorite Cartel out of the stakes winning mare Up For It, Ready For It trailed during the early part of this race before accelerating from post five to win by a head as the even money favorite. Jesus Rios Ayala piloted the Monty Arrossa-trainee to victory.
“It was an exciting race,” said Johnny Flores of Juniors Quarter Horses, Inc. “It took the horse a little while to get comfortable in the race, but he closed extremely well. He was excellent to be honest.”
Bred by Ed Allred, Ready For It (winning on the outside) earned $13,750 for the win after covering the 350 yards in :17.835. A graduate of the Los Alamitos Equine Sale, Ready For It is eligible to compete in the trials to the Golden State Million Futurity and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity to be held here later this year.
Steve Burns’ Winners Share earned $5,625 for running second with Jose Nicasio up for trainer Mike Casselman. Allred’s So Can I earned $3,125 for running third. Verbosity and Beduinos Favorite completed the field.
